Everton responded to the 6-2 loss at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday by scoring five of their own in a convincing 5-1 victory at Turf Moor.
Intent on making amends following the humiliating home defeat, Everton wasted little time before taking a goal lead- just 100 seconds in. Yerry Mina would find himself unmarked within range to head in his first Everton goal, assisted by a great cross from Bernard.
Playing with a level of confidence that deserted them just three days earlier at Goodison Park, Everton scored twice again by the time the game had reached the twenty-five minute mark. Lucas Digne, as he did against Watford earlier in December, showcased his talent from set-pieces, producing a left footed effort from around 20-yards out that Leighton Baines would be proud of.
Set-piece practice would come useful again for Marco Silva’s team, Burnley captain Ben Mee would be penalised for handling the ball in the area- the resulting penalty was dispatched with intent from Gylfi Sigurdsson, his eighth goal of the season and the second penalty scored of an attempted four this season.
Ben Gibson would get one back in his first Premier League appearance for the home team. tarnishing Jordan Pickford’s hopes of maintaining a clean sheet, but Everton would ramp into an even higher gear in the second half. Usual starters Idrissa Gueye and Richarlison would make game time coming from the bench.
Travelling Evertonians would be given another late Christmas present from Lucas Digne. as he scored yet another long distance effort after being teed up by Bernard on the left. Five of his last seven league goals (including three for Everton) have come from outside the box.
The fifth and final goal would come courtesy of the aforementioned Richarlison, who picked up a really good position off the shoulder of the last man in the Burnley line, Sigurdsson would turn provider with an eye of the needle final ball which would be subsequently prodded home with the outside left foot of the Brazilian number 30, who is now on his 9th of this Premier League campaign.
Rising from 11th to 8th in the table, Everton bring an end to a five game winless streak in clinical, encouraging fashion.
