Many Everton fans were shocked recently when rumours emerged that Everton would be willing to listen to offers for young defender Mason Holgate, however these reports have now been deemed to be false. The Liverpool Echo have claimed that new duo Marcel brands and Marco Silva have no interest in selling Holgate but that the former Barnsely man is in integral to their plans going forward.
Holgate was somewhat of a highlight in Everton’s disastrous 2017/18 campaign as the 21-year0old slotted in as a ball-playing centre-half as well as right-back for the blues. The former Barnsley player seemed to have secured a position in the starting 11 until Sam Allardyce took over, thus finishing the season with 13 appearances to his name.
With the ageing Phil Jagielka probably winding down towards the end of his career, Ramiro Funes Mori already departed to Villarreal and Ahsley Williams allegedly part of a big summer sale, Mason Holgate will presumably play a prominent role at the heart of Everton’s defence this season.
Mouctar Diakhaby, formerly of Lyon, allegedly rejected a move to Goodison Park this summer in favour of a transfer to Valencia, which could signal a place for Holgate in the main team if Silva fails to land his desired targets at centre-half. Everton fans will look forward to the coming season and Everton’s long-standing reputation of bringing through young English talent looks set to continue with players such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Tom Davies and Mason Holgate set to play major roles in the new era.
