With the transfer window coming to a close and many believing that we have not bought enough quality, in the right areas there may be cause for concern. However there is still a chance for Koeman and the board to get players into the club, and that is by the way of the free transfer market. Which is still open and remains open until October. So I thought why not look at the best options there of those players out of contract, and out of favour and see if any could help our push for a top 6 place.
Giuseppe Rossi
The Italian striker who started his career at Manchester United was released by Celta Vigo in July, after suffering a injury. He has since recovered and is looking for a new club. With our lack of strikers and finishing ability up top a man like Rossi could be really useful to have, I believe he would really help the likes of Calvert-Lewin and Sandro develop into better finishers and more complete players with his experience. Also with us qualifying for the europa league group stage we are going to be playing lots of games, so the more quality players the better. His best spell of his career came at Villarreal where he scored 54 times in 136 games, so he obviously would have an eye for goal.
Benoit Tremoulinas
Another position blues fans thought was left a little short was left back, where we are in big trouble if Leighton Baines was to pick up an injury, we have no cover as we sent out youngster Callum Connolly on loan, on deadline day. One man who could solve this problem is 31 year old Benoit Tremoulinas. After his contract expired at Sevilla last year he would be a good player to play backup to Baines, he also has rich Europa League experience which could come in handy this year, he’s won the competition twice with Sevilla. Also with 5 caps for the French national team his most recent coming last December, this must mean that he isn’t past it yet.
Carlos De Pena
The Uruguayan winger could be our answer of getting some pace into the side, before the return of Bolasie and Coleman. A real problem which is affecting our build up play drastically, and making us play much slower football. De Pena would definitely bring pace into the side and at 26 years of age, those legs won’t be past it just yet. With 15 goals in 58 games for Nacional in Brazil, he also shows that he has an eye for goal not just rapid speed. His wage demand shouldn’t be a lot either like some of the others so worth a go surely?
Sebastian Bassong
Another position we left short, and that Koeman stated he wanted improving was centre back. With Funes Mori out all season it could be a problem only having three centre backs in the squad. A out of contract player who could fill that void could be Sebastian Bassong the ex Norwich and Spurs man’s contract expired this summer, and he is available. Maybe not the best but he could definitely do a job, and his premier league experience would definitely help him fit in.
So will Koeman delve into the free market, or will he just wait until the January window to improve his squad. I believe with Bolasie and Coleman soon returning he will feel no need to go into this market, and waste the wage budget, but we will have to wait and see.
