REPORT | TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 5-0 EVERTON

Everton were on the receiving end of a thrashing as they shipped five to a rampant Tottenham Hotspur.

Harry Kane forced an own goal off Michael Keane before grabbing a brace for himself and Heung-Min Son and Sergio Reguilon also got their names on the scoresheet.

It was a humiliating evening for the Toffees who were suffocated by the Spurs defence while their own backline was repeatedly and remorselessly picked apart.

Frank Lampard will no doubt have a clearer idea of the frailties of the squad he has inherited and their inability to pull off the high defensive line was the ultimate cause of the resounding 5-0 scoreline.

The hosts struck the first blow on 14 minutes when Seamus Coleman was outstripped by Ryan Sessegnon down the left and his cross was turned in by Keane who had Kane breathing down his neck.

Just three minutes later, some erratic Everton defending allowed Son in and he doubled Tottenham’s lead with a shot Jordan Pickford probably should have done better with on both his 200th Premier League appearance and 28th birthday.

Then, on 37 minutes, the high defensive line was well and truly caught out and a routine Matt Doherty through-ball allowed Kane in for a simple finish, meaning the Blues went in at half-time 3-0 down.

Keane was brought off due to illness at half-time and replaced by Jarrad Branthwaite and within a minute of play resuming, a driven cross from Dejan Kulusevski was turned in by Reguilon.

On 55 minutes, the rout was completed with an expert volley from Kane, completing yet another double against Everton, the sixth of his career.

It was a very telling night for the Toffees, whose relegation fears will only have worsened.

A flat, inept performance from pretty much everyone involved, with the exception of Anthony Gordon who seemed the only one truly trying to make something happen against Spurs’ sturdy defensive set-up.

It was just about the worst performance in the 13-year Everton career of Coleman, with the fact the 33-year-old has still not been adequately replaced looking more costly than ever.

There are some massive games coming up for the Blues and they know they have to start picking up wins quickly as the relegation trapdoor is looming.
