On Sunday night, Everton Women defeated hosts Aston Villa 2-1 to earn their second victory of the season. Brian Sorensen’s team put on a valiant display and won all three points thanks to a composed Nathalie Bjorn penalty.
Everton manager, Brian Sørensen made two changes to the side that drew with Bristol City at home last weekend. Hanna Bennison and Heather Payne started in place of the suspended Martina Piemonte and Aurora Galli.
The first forty-five minutes were intensely competitive, with two near calls on Everton’s part by Katja Snoeijs. The first, the Dutch attacker got through on goal after four minutes; however, Daphne Van Domselaar blocked her attempt. On minute 41, the Aston Villa goalkeeper again demonstrated her importance by tipping a close-range attempt by Snoeijs over the crossbar.
Ten minutes into the second half, Everton’s fighting momentum continued, as they secured their first goal of the game.
Playing the ball across the Villa goal on the left hand side, Sara Holmgaard found Heather Payne whose shot connected with Villa’s Anna Patten who sent it into her own goal.
However, Villa quickly rained on Everton’s parade as they equalised a minute later. After cutting down Everton’s left, Kirsty Hanson produced a low cross which found Rachel Daly, whose first-time attempt nestled in the near post.
The Toffee’s pursued Villa again, not letting this break their spirits. Nathalie Björn, the substitute, would have the final say. Hanson clattered Payne in the penalty area and the referee saw right away that it was a penalty. With just over 10 minutes remaining in normal time, the Swedish international duly restored Everton’s lead with a crisp finish.
After that, the Toffees’ fortitude and character were put to the test, which they passed with flying colours. In the closing moments, Courtney Brosnan—a player who has proven invaluable in a number of situations this season—stepped up to stop former blues Simone Magill and Kenza Dali.
The three points seals the second victory of the 23/24 Women’s Super League campaign for Everton heading into the international break. The Blue’s are back in WSL action on Sunday the 10th of December when they face West Ham United at the Chigwell Construction Stadium, kick off is at 3pm.
