Sara Holmgaard Signs New Contract

Sara Holmgaard has signed a new deal with Everton.

The full-back joined the Club in August 2022 with her twin, Karen, spending the first half of the season on loan before making her Blues debut in January 2023.

In her first full campaign on Merseyside, the Denmark international took her game to the next level despite spells on the sidelines through injury.

Holmgaard featured in 12 league games in 2023/24, scoring twice and registering three assists, two of those for her sister Karen in away matches at West Ham United in December 2023 and Brighton & Hove Albion in April 2024.

A defender who brings real maturity to her game, Holmgaard told evertontv she is excited by the impact she can have in Brian Sorensen’s squad.

“I’ve been really happy over these past two years as an Everton player, so it was an easy decision to stay,” Holmgaard said.

“I’m really enjoying my football. I have new-found motivation after a really tough year with injuries.

“We have brought in some really good players and have a strong squad.

“We have a really good group here and I’m looking forward to seeing what the new season brings.”

At international level, Holmgaard has flourished and has become a top performer for her nation, scoring her maiden Denmark strike in the recent win over Belgium that secured European Championship qualification.

Oozing with confidence, the defender hopes she can continue to showcase that belief in her Club game in order to take the Blues higher up the Women’s Super League table.

“You have seen over the past two seasons how far we have come as a team,” she added.

“Our fans are fantastic; they mean a lot to us as players. Hopefully we can see many more with us this season and we really appreciate their support.

“We have a quality team and I’m excited to see how far we can go.”

Blues boss Sorensen praised the development of Holmgaard and believes there is still plenty more the talented full-back can give.

“It’s great to extend Sara’s time at the Club,” he told evertonfc.com.

“I feel we haven’t seen the best of her yet due to injuries and how she joined halfway through the season before last.

“I’m super excited to see her hopefully get a full season under her belt and I think we can see her game reaching a new level.

“We want our defenders to be offensive in their game and Sara fits that role.

“She can score goals, she can drive the team forward.

“Sara is a hard worker, a good character, I’m really pleased she’s staying.”
