Okoronkwo’s Dream Debut! Young Blues Adjust To Life Away From Goodison

Francis Okoronkwo Celebrates scording on his Salford City debut

Hello, and welcome to the first loan report of the 2024/25 season! Nine blues are plying their trade away from Goodison Park this campaign, with many at vastly contrasting stages of their Everton careers. Let’s take a look at how they’ve faired in August, and what to expect from each player.

League Two:

Billy Crellin- Accrington Stanley – 23rd out of 24

Billy Crellin Accrington Stanley

Crellin sealed his first loan move since joining the Toffees on deadline day, penning a season-long deal to join Accrington Stanley.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper, whose last taste of men’s football came in 2021, made his debut in a 4-1 home defeat to Stockport County in the EFL Trophy.

Accrington have had a disappointing start to the season, losing three of their first five games, as well as a first-round knockout in the League Cup.

Crellin was an unused substitute for the club’s last two league matches, as he looks to dislodge starting ‘keeper Michael Kelly from the squad.

Stanley face Crewe Alexandra at home on Saturday, with the former England youth international hoping to be given a chance in the line-up.

Jenson Metcalfe- Chesterfield – 9th out of 24

Jenson Metcalfe Chesterfield

Metcalfe secured a deadline day move to newly promoted Chesterfield and has made an instant impact, winning fans over early with two impressive cameos from the bench.

The 20-year-old academy graduate caught the eye of Everton supporters with solid performances in pre-season and was rewarded with a place among the substitutes for the club’s first two Premier League games.

Metcalfe’s loan to the Spireites affords him his first chance in senior football, and the midfielder appears to have taken the opportunity following a particularly pleasing display against Grimsby Town.

Chesterfield, who sit 9th in the table after a steady start, travel to Port Vale next with the Everton youngster in line to feature from the off.

Francis Okoronkwo- Salford City- 19th out of 24

Okoronkwo had a debut to remember for Salford, securing all three points in front of the Sky Sports cameras with an excellent solo goal.

The 19-year-old made his mark just before half-time, receiving the ball on the half-turn 25 yards out, jinking past the MK Dons defender before bending home into the bottom right corner with a controlled finish.

The young forward was left out of the squad against Wrexham in the EFL Trophy, but will surely be back in the XI against Cheltenham Town on Saturday.

League One:

Harry Tyrer- Blackpool- 22nd out of 24

Tyrer embarked on his third loan move in as many years when he made the switch to Bloomfield Road following Everton’s re-signing of Asmir Begovic.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper has impressed all at Finch Farm since his maiden spell at Chester in 2022/23 and has jumped two divisions in joining Blackpool, having won the Conference with Chesterfield last season.

The Seasiders have had a disastrous start to the campaign, hiring Steve Bruce after four winless league games.

Tyrer didn’t feature in these matches, but did start in the club’s 4-1 EFL Trophy victory over Crewe Alexandra.

The academy graduate was at fault for the visitors’ only goal, gifting Calum Agius the ball whilst attempting to play from the back.

Blackpool face Exeter at home on Saturday.

Tyler Onyango- Stockport County- 2nd out of 24

Onyango made the move to Stockport early in the window, and has featured in all five of County’s games during their electric start to the season.

The 21-year-old midfielder, with five senior Everton appearances to his name, has started the last two matches, even deputising at right back in a 1-1 draw at Mansfield Town.

The Hatters face Crawley Town on Saturday as they look to continue their recent form.

Championship:

Mason Holgate- West Bromwich Albion- 2nd out of 24

Holgate achieved his much-needed move away from Goodison in the last hours of the window, returning for a second loan spell at West Brom.

The defender has had a tough time over the past few years, with a fresh start needed for all parties.

Holgate’s return to the Hawthorn’s sees the Baggies second in the table, having missed out on promotion last season through the play-offs.

The 27-year-old is in the last year of his Everton contract and is yet to feature for Albion.

Scottish Premiership:

Elijah Campbell- Ross County- 10th out of 12

Campbell made his debut off the bench in a last-gasp defeat against Aberdeen, conceding in the 98th minute of a 1-0 loss.

The move north of the border is the defender’s second experience of men’s football, having tasted relegation last term with Fleetwood Town.

The 20-year-old will be hoping for a first start for his new club against Dundee on Saturday.

Challenger Pro-League:

Reece Welch- Deinze- 1st out of 16

Welch signed for Belgian second division outfit Deinze in one of the more bizarre transfers of the summer.

The 20-year-old centre-back endured a tough spell at Forest Green last season, with Kevin Thelwell opting to cut the youngster’s loan short.

Welch is yet to feature in Belgium, although the club are currently top of the league and unbeaten in all competitions.

Ligue 1:

Neal Maupay- Marseille- 2nd out of 18

Maupay got his move away from Merseyside on the final day of the window and made no secret of his elation, posting a rather distasteful celebration on X, furthering his villainous reputation among Evertonian’s.

The striker, who scored one goal in 32 games for the Blues, joins a Marseille side who sit second in the table.

The 28-year-old made his debut in a 3-1 away win vs Toulouse and gears up to face Nice next.
