PREVIEW | Doncaster Rovers V Everton – Carabao Cup 2nd Round

Everton kick off their hunt for the Carabao Cup, Wednesday the 30th, against Doncaster Rovers. The Blues, who are still in search of their first win of the 23/24 season, and also their first goal, will look to change their fortune as they are favorites in this match.

Everton as well as Rovers’ are bottom of their respective leagues and hope to build off a possible win and an extended cup run. Rovers are in a terrible run of form as they have only claimed 1 point out of a possible 15, but yet, Everton are not too far off of that number, claiming a grand total of 0 out of possible 9 points.

Whilst Dyche and company have not looked like a bottom-of-the-table team, they do waste their chances and often have lapses of concentration while defending, which is exactly why they’re in the position they are in.

This midweek match is the perfect opportunity for Everton to find the back of the net and remember how to win games. With Sheffield United on Saturday, it is very important to play well and win comfortably to have some confidence and form going into what is a crucial match at the weekend.

The lineup will presumably be a lot of our bench players such as Gomes, Cannon, and Virginia, etc. I believe a lot of fans are hoping to see Chermiti receive more game time, as he looked quite up to the challenge in the previous match against Wolves. Newly announced Beto will almost surely not be featured in the 18.

Doncaster Rovers will likely line up in 4-3-3, as that is what manager Grant McCann prefers. With George Miller, who had a team leading 11 goals last season and forward Luke Molyneux, they will look to undo any hopes that Everton have.

Rovers, who on average allow a goal every 38 minutes, and also allow an average of 2.4 goals a game, will need to tidy up in the back in order to have a chance at advancing in this Cup tournament, or do they? Everton have an xG of 1.62 over their first three matches of the Premier League season but have yet to score, but based off of their xG, shots per 90 and play, I’d expect them to score 1-2 during Wednesday’s match.

Strictly off the quality difference in the two sides, Everton should have no difficulty winning this match but, Everton will make it harder than it needs to be, won’t they? All in all, I’m excited for this match and you should be too! It’s been way too long since we have celebrated a win. UTFT!
