September has been and gone, us blues have been filling the Everton void caused by the international break while we await our next game against West Ham United at Goodison on the 17th of October. Let’s have a quick round up of how the blues managed in the month of September then.
First up was our 3-1 victory at Goodison against Burnley with Andros Townsend picking up the Premier League Goal Of The Month award for his rocket! After that came Rafa Benitez’s first defeat as Everton Manager as we faced up against Aston Villa at Villa Park where we were thrashed 3-0 thanks to former long term Everton target Leon Bailey. So a heavy first defeat for Benitez’s men and not long after “London was calling” as we faced off against QPR in the Carabao Cup only for us to lose on penalties after making Charlie Austin look like a prime Pele. 2 defeats in 2 for Rafa Benitez, some moans and groans from some fans were already starting.
Suddenly a home game against Norwich City looked absolutely massive as one would think questions would be asked if we were unable to win against a team who hadn’t yet picked had got their first League win of the season. Thankfully a cool penalty from Andros Townsend and another goal by Abdoulaye Doucoure gave Everton a much needed 3 points.
So in total; 4 games in September, 2 wins and 2 losses. A mixed bag but Everton went into the international break in high spirits after the draw against Manchester United. But lets leave that game for next months article. Here are the players as voted by The Toffee Blues contributors;
Second Place – Abdoulaye Doucoure
The French midfielder is only 1 goal away from equaling his goal total from last season only taking him 8 games to do so. Rafa Benitez is really doing some magic with Doucoure and telling the 28 year old to push up the pitch more and have a better attacking presence is really making a difference. 4 assists so far as well for the Frenchman who only managed 3 last season. It really is brilliant to see the best of Doucoure at the moment and long may it continue! Forza Doucs!
First Place – Andros Townsend
Let’s be serious here, it was never going to be anybody else. If you told any Evertonian last season when we had Carlo Ancelotti managing us, with James Rodriguez doing bits on the pitch that Andros Townsend would be one of our most crucial players only a year later practically carrying the team, you would have been called insane. Andros has been proving the doubters wrong, many faces were pulled when this signing was announced and now we all have egg on our face. A grafter, a leader on the pitch. 3 goals in September with 2 assists, as well as the Premier League Goal Of The Month award for that beauty against Burnley. Keep proving us wrong Andros and keep up that amazing form!
