David Ornstein of The Athletic has reported that England international Kieran Trippier is looking for a move away from Newcastle United before the Summer Transfer Window closes, with Everton among the clubs interested.
The 33-year old has played under Everton manager Sean Dyche before at Burnley. He has spent time at Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, where he won a league title. Trippier has since returned to England to play for Newcastle just over 2 years ago, with his spell at the Magpies dividing opinions. With the younger Livramento breaking into Eddie Howe’s starting XI, playing time seems to be the main reason for the move away from St. James’ Park. Which could see the veteran full back make a move to reunite with Dyche at Goodison Park.
Capped 54 times for England and featured heavily under the departing Gareth Southgate. Trippier can pose a threat on either side of the pitch, as was shown for England during the EUROs this summer in Germany. A regular set-piece taker for club and country (when picked), the experienced Premier League full back could provide cover for Mykolenko on the left and also prove to be a valuable option on the right hand side, ahead of Coleman, Young and Patterson.
Toffee Blues says:
4/5 – There will be question marks about his age. However this is a transfer that makes sense for all parties. Trippier needs game time and will likely wish to stay in England and play the latter stages of his career in the Premier League. Meanwhile Everton are in desperate need of options at full back. An experience, creative full back in the form of Trippier would be considered a luxury at the moment. With Trippier comfortably slotting into Everton’s stronger XI.
The club have said they would look at what is available when it comes to further transfers and a loan would suit Everton’s current situation, provided the loan fees and wages can be agreed upon with Newcastle. Trippier has a strong connection with Toffee’s boss Dyche and could link up with fellow England team mate Jordan Pickford and former Burnley team mates James Tarkowski and Dwight McNeil.
The debate of adding a 33-year old full back to a squad that already contains 35-year old Seamus Coleman and 39-year old Ashley Young can wait for another day. Everton’s early season showing against Brighton shows the need for other options in this part of the pitch and given the limited pool Everton can dip into, Trippier would not be a bad option at all.
