Turkish football have reported that Henry Onyekuru is close to a loan move to Galatasaray, after failing to qualify for a work permit to play in England. Onyekuru signed at the beginning of the 2017/18 season but was forced to move to Anderlecht on loan for the season due to not having established himself high enough at international level. Due to Nigeria’s low World Ranking prior to the World Cup, Onyekuru would’ve had to have played in 75% of Nigeria’s competitive matches in the previous 2 years.
Despite returning from a long-term injury to be eligible to play for loan club Anderlecht in the previous season, the Belgian outfit chose not to play Onyekuru so that he would not be called up for Nigeria’s World Cup squad and therefore not qualifying for a work permit in England in the hope that he would be be forced to return on loan in the 2018/19 season.
Everton and Onyekuru have opted to send him to Galatasaray instead and subject to a medical, he will remain in Turkey for the entirety of the 2018/19 campaign.
